Triga Creative & The Centre for Sustainable Practice in the Arts hosted our inaugural Eco-Design Charrette from December 2nd - 20th, 2019 at Triga Studio in the Parkdale neighbourhood of Toronto. The Eco-Design Charrette aimed to fuel each participant with the knowledge and inspiration needed to design with an ecological consciousness. Through rapid design seeding we worked to expand how we imagine scenography and its power to change our world.
The Eco-Design Charrette was centered on the creation of concepts for each of the fifty Climate Change Theatre Action plays. Over the span of the Charrette each participating designer created seed concepts for 1-4 of the short plays. In order to support this work and create a context for the cross pollination of ideas, Triga Creative curated a series of ecoscenography workshops, panel conversations, play readings and open studio time. The Eco-Design Charrette period was an opportunity to develop an ecoscenographic practice alongside other designers and generate design concepts for publication and exhibition with an international reach. The charrette culminated the global participatory CCTA festival with a closing party and exhibition where we shared the work created during the three-week charrette residency with the local Toronto community.
The designs generated were exhibited at Triga Studio during DesignTO in January 2020. All designs generated during the Eco-Design Charrette have been published in Lighting the Way which will be featured at World Stage Design in Calgary 2022. See an excerpt below.
